Canadian-born, Houston-based artist Christian Eckart creates paintings that represent a new way of picture making in a post-internet era and in the context of virtual reality and artificial intelligence. By using internet sourced stock images in this pieces, depicting a natural environment, he also questions the assumption of authority requisite to authorship. This work continues a visual lineage combining elements from his previous series of iconic White Paintings with an investigation of the sublime and meta-sublime beyond painting/sculpture hybrids into digital and photographic realms. Eckart blends timeless archetypes from the history of art with Modernism’s devotion to minimal abstraction with a pixelated twist. His work has been exhibited in numerous group and solo exhibitions throughout the United States and abroad.
