An exquisite use of contour line and thoughtful play with both abstract and representational techniques characterize much of the work by Brooklyn-based, German artist Volker Hüller. In this work from 2017, a delicate grid of lines made by the etching process serves as the groundwork for an image of a bird in a cage. A murky build-up of painterly layers gives the work a dark, sensuous quality that is moody and beautiful. Hüller’s work has been included in solo and group exhibitions in galleries in the US and Europe. His work is in the collections of MoMA, New York, and The Israel Museum, Jerusalem.
