Gareth Nyandoro

DSTV (HOMAGE TO MASENDA SIGNS)

2019
mixed media and cut paper collage in artist’s frame
33 x 33 inches

Gareth Nyandoro takes inspiration from the people, markets, and daily interactions of his home city of Harare, capital of Zimbabwe. Nyandoro’s background is in printmaking, and evidence of etching and other processes can be seen in the way he carves, scratches, and blots the paper to make an image. Here, he transforms a makeshift ad for Digital Satellite Television installation and sales into a brightly colored painting, a playful, Pop reminder of improvised human interactions one sees in large cities. Nyandoro co-represented Zimbabwe at the 56th Venice Biennale, and his work is in the collection of MoMA, New York.
