Maximalist painter Steven Charles begins each work with an element taken from his previous painting. Proudly processed-oriented rather than conceptually-driven, Charles allows the painting to grow on its own accord in an attempt to surprise himself. Here, the accumulations of this process surprise the viewer; gloopy dots and stripes break into broad strokes of blues and greens. The diagonal divide of the vertical bars lends the work a structure that becomes disrupted, as every element of the work reacts to each other. Currently based in Dallas, Charles was born in the UK. His work has been exhibited throughout the US, and he has received the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant and the Artist’s Fellowship from The New York Foundation for the Arts.
