Houston-based painter Marcelyn McNeil builds her colorful, bulbous abstract works by pouring, masking, sanding, and inscribing the paint on her surfaces. Her idiosyncratic approach can be seen in this untitled work, where the crisp white and gray lines surround a central blue shape. The composition implies a three-dimensional structure or form, though their rounded arcs and intersecting angles deny any real world analogue. McNeil’s paintings have been shown across the US, and in 2013 she was a finalist for the Richard Diebenkorn Fellowship.
