New York-based Eddie Martinez’s energetic and boisterous works show the influence of numerous visual sources – graffiti, cartoons, and post-War abstraction – but they ultimately remain engaged with the current generation’s re-evaluation of the language of abstraction. Martinez’s paintings are deeply connected to his practice of drawing, and his animated and varied use of line is a dominant element in much of his work. The artist has said he wants “to make a large painting feel like a drawing,” and here his use of ink, oil, enamel, and spray paint results in a process-driven work that possesses a complex, organized spatial composition. Martinez’s work has been included in numerous group exhibitions worldwide.
