German artist Peter Dreher began his Tag um Tag Guter Tag (Day by Day, Good Day) series in 1974, and has since painted nearly 5000 images of the same subject – a single cylindrical glass on a surface in front of a white wall. Often compared to works by On Kawara and Roman Opalka, Dreher’s series is a meditation on the passage of time with a Zen-like focus on the humility of a glass cylinder reflecting light and its surroundings. The piece challenges the pace and focus of contemporary life, and demands the slowness it takes to decipher the windows and objects present in the room at the time it was painted. Dreher’s work has been included in a number of exhibitions throughout Europe.
