Shio Kusaka

(STRAWBERRY 41)

stoneware
17 x 9 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches

LA-based Shio Kusaka elevates the tradition of the clay pot by incorporating gestural glazes and quirky designs into shapes reminiscent of classical Western and Japanese vessels. Strawberry 41 exudes an elegant sense of play, with its slightly tapered shape, wide mouth, and suggestion of a strawberry fruit. The pattern of the fruit is formed by incising the seeds in the clay, with the matte red glaze skipping these dips in the stoneware. Kusaka’s pottery is widely regarded for its confident and whimsical design, and 39 of her vessels were exhibited in the 2014 Whitney Biennial.
