NOTHING BETWEEN YOU AND I

2009
rayon, cotton and polyester thread, and pins
120 x 60 x 18 inches

Dallas artist Rebecca Carter transforms words and phrases into hand-made sculptural installations that arouse meaning while resisting definitive answers. Filling the wall with scripted text, dangling thread, and poignant voids, Nothing Between You and I traces only the pronouns of the recipient and the sender in a personal letter from Carter’s relative, removing clues to the relationship of the two characters. While the title suggests a lack of connection between the two people, the repetition of “you” and “I” evokes longing and distance, one that is made literal as the space between the words grows and shrinks. Without the added context of the missing phrases and punctuation, the repetition of “you” and “I” opens up the interpretation to the imagination of the viewer, suggesting love, regret, or loss.
