Raffi Kalenderian

ELLIOTT

2005
pencil and oil on paper
24 x 18 inches

Born and based in Los Angeles, Raffi Kalenderian paints portraits of his friends and acquaintances. The artist’s subjects, hip young men and women, are seemingly lost in thought as their gaze is adverted from their potential audience. The subtle subtext of their inward, knowing gazes and graceful gestures conjures timeless narratives of love, loss, and existential crisis. As with Elliott, most of Kalenderian’s protagonists are depicted as full-length portraits in domestic settings, and the works’ titles give us their first name only. Kalenderian’s work has been exhibited at venues in the United States, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland.
