Mamie Tinkler

CLEAVE

2021
watercolor and gouache on paper mounted to aluminum
16 x 12 inches

Working within the tradition of still life, Mamie Tinkler dutifully recreates detailed, theatrical moments featuring flowers, mirrors, candles, and plants, alongside large areas of lush washes that revel in the fluidity of gouache and watercolor. In Cleave, Tinkler focuses her eye on the bulges of strange vegetables, tomatoes, or gourds that swell unexpectedly before turning in onto themselves. Mirrored plates or stands separate each layer, reflecting the colors and textures of the produce while baffling the viewer. The drama of the scene is indulgent, compelling, and absurd all at once. Tinkler lives and works in New York. Her works have been exhibited at solo and group exhibitions in the US, and her work was featured at the 2020 Armory Show in the Presents section as part of a two-person exhibition.
