The familiar becomes unfamiliar in the work of Polish artist Monika Sosnowska. Her recent body of work was inspired by travel to Bangladesh where areas of capital city Dhaka feel like they are in an ambiguous state of construction or decay. Inspired by steel rebar sticking out of concrete forms throughout the city, Sosnowska created a series of “plants.” These works playfully conjure the growth and change of a botanical garden through the vernacular of modern architecture. Sosnowska represented Poland at the 52nd Venice Biennial in 2007, and her work has been featured in solo shows at institutions such as Muzeum Susch, Engadin; The Contemporary Austin; Museum of Contemporary Art, Porto; Museo Tamayo, Mexico City; Herzliya Museum of Contemporary Art, Tel Aviv; and MoMA, New York.
