THE SOLID SPACE, AS YOU UNLOOSE

2018
silicone, porcelain, and glazed stoneware
31 x 9 x 6 1/2 inches

Quietly composed and deeply resonant, Danish-born Marie Herwald Hermann’s groupings of ceramic objects exude a mysterious tranquility. Divorced from their utilitarian function, her ceramic objects become occupants of the artist-designed shelf, interacting with each other in the space of a small universe created by the artist. In The Solid Space, as You Unloose, one vessel acts as container for a rod that overlaps a small disc, while the other firmly holds a sheet of silicone in place, articulating gravity and the negative space below. Hermann received her MFA from the Royal College of Art in London, and her work has been shown in the US, Europe, and China.
