Through a recurring cast of everyday objects, LA-based Robert Therrien creates playful, uncanny, and often psychologically-loaded moments in his work. Here, an animated tower of plates and bowls appears to wobble back and forth, suggesting the instability of a household scene. Therrien’s work has affinities to Pop art, evidenced here by the almost cartoonish way the dishes are depicted, yet there is a cool distance that suggests a more internal reading of the familiar objects that quietly inhabit our everyday lives. Therrien’s work has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions, including Table and Six Chairs, Public Art Fund, New York; Tables and Chairs, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego; Works on Paper, Kunstmuseum Basel; and Artist Rooms: Robert Therrien, Tate Modern, London, among numerous others.
