Sayre Gomez

UNTITLED PAINTING IN CERULEAN WITH TROMPE L’OEIL

2016
acrylic on canvas
40 x 29 1/2 x 1 1/2 inches

LA-based artist Sayre Gomez blends trompe l’oeil effects and abstract compositions in many of his recent works – watery paintings that seem to peel away from or ooze down the surface of the work. In this piece, splatters and drips of paint in the cerulean composition are layered beneath photo-realistically rendered drops of water. Gomez pushes the illusion past believability with a kitschy star-shaped glare in the large droplet in the lower half of the painting. In his installations, video work, and paintings, Gomez incorporates elements of graphic design and popular culture into a formalist aesthetic.
