EMBOSSED PAINTING SERIES

2017
acrylic on panel
28 5/8 x 28 5/8 inches

Noritaka Tatehana received international acclaim when his heel-less shoes were popularized by celebrities and socialites, perhaps most famously by Lady Gaga. And though he is known as a designer, his expansive practice includes sculpture, installation, bunraku (classical puppetry performance), and painting, seen here in Embossed Painting Series. Using an embossed pattern often featured on his heel-less shoes, Tatehana creates an abstract painting that highlights the beauty of the pattern’s repeated geometric forms and subtle relief edges. Tatehana’s work is included in the collections of institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Victoria & Albert Museum.
