A continued interest in biology and metamorphosis fuels David Altmejd’s sculptures. Altmejd has often equated the body with architecture, seen here in The Storms, where a plaster section of wall is altered by a mold of the artist’s hand. The artist’s gestures – pours, scrapes, and breaks – show the material’s properties as it dries from a thick liquid to a brittle surface. Scratched shapes on the surface conjure a celestial backdrop for the transformative forces of the storm taking place in the piece. Altmejd’s work is in numerous public collections, and a major retrospective of his work took place at the Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris (MAM/ARC) in 2014.
