In the ongoing series Homonymes, French artist Isabelle Cornaro piles flea market finds, vases, tchotchkes, personal objects, and other familiar things into systematic arrangements that are cast into resin sculptures. By homogenizing the assemblages with one material and color, Cornaro accentuates the forms as separate from the symbolism they may carry, removing sentimentality and fetishism. Here, the repetition of rectangular and cylindrical forms conceals the original function of the objects and creates a constructivist composition. Trained as an art historian before moving into a career as an artist, Cornaro detaches the aesthetic qualities of an object from its cultural and historical associations, most recently seen in her installations that reinterpret classical landscapes.
