2016

The monochrome, a favorite of modernist painters, is reawakened in the geometric compositions of Nathlie Provosty. In Form Forum, fluctuations of light on the matte and glossy surface reveal a simple loop traveling in and out of the frame. Within the fields of black, a deep burgundy emerges and vibrates against the curving lines and bisected picture plane. Reminiscent of Ad Reinhardt’s Black Paintings or the later work of Rothko, Provosty’s atmospheric paintings require the viewer’s focused attention to appreciate her subtle handling of color and shape.
