Michael Williams manufactures a goofy and fanciful world in his diverse body of work, all in his loosely rendered, cartoonish style. His collages start with a found image, cropped down to a head or body part. Williams then creates an alternate reality based around this small bit of information. Here, the stiffly-posed pair of hands giving a massage contrast with Williams’ scraggly scene of a shaggy-haired man receiving a massage from a figure with a sun-like face. Williams received his BFA from Washington University in St. Louis, and he has been in solo and group shows at galleries such as CANADA, New York; Veneklasen/ Werner, Berlin; and Michael Werner, London. His work will be featured in the upcoming show The Forever Now: Contemporary Painting in an Atemporal World at MoMA, New York.
