Martí Cormand

GREEN STRIP (69.5 INCHES)

2011
oil on paper
69 1/2 x 2 inches

In his recent work, Spanish-born artist Marti Cormand has been making trompe l’oeil paintings of cardboard, tape, and other throw-away packing materials. Cormand’s precise rendering of these lowly objects generates a playful juxtaposition between their life as discarded containers for valuables and his reinvention of them as precious works of art. Green Strip (69.5 Inches) is a particularly concise example of this work, existing as a minimal green line on the wall that vibrates between image and installation. Cormand’s work has been exhibited at venues such as Portland Museum of Art; Arranz-Bravo Foundation, Hospitalet de Llobregat, Barcelona, Spain; Aldrich 2007 Emerging Artist Award Exhibition, Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Ridgefield; and Villa Arson, Nice. His work is included in several collections such as The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Fundacio La Caixa, Barcelona; and Fundacio Villa, Barcelona.
